Safe Haven Sheltering Program

The Safe Haven is an overnight shelter for homeless adults. Our capacity is 15 guests. Our guests are selected from an application and interview process. When a guest enters the program they will have a guaranteed bed for the season (November 1st - May 1st). We select guests based on the following criteria: 1) making a concerted effort to become self-sufficient, 2) peaceful by nature, 3) sobriety, 4) emotionally or physically vulnerable at a warming center, 5) helpful. Note that we are not able to support certain levels of physical or mental limitations. To apply fill out the Safe Haven Application and email to, or fill out the form below.

During the core of winter, November 15th to March 31st, the shelter is open every night from 6:30pm-7am. In the fall and spring, the "shoulder seasons" we open based on weather conditions. Volunteers provide a dinner meal and the program supplies a light breakfast.

Opening Guidelines during the "shoulder seasons":

Our Opening Guidelines are as follows:

• Overnight low forecast, 24 hrs prior, is 25F or lower,

• or more than 1 inch of snow

In addition, if the daytime weather is dangerous we will open the shelter. The criteria is a forecast high of 25F or lower, or blizzard conditions, or 6" or more of snowfall forecast during the day.

We employ the homeless guests who show a desire to overcome their addiction(s) and/or situation. After a few interviews and discussions a guest will be hired on a part-time basis, which allows for resume building and the opportunity to rejoin the work environment. AFS has seen this program rebuild hope and dignity in many guests
